Understanding GLP-1 Medications: What You Should Know
If you’ve been hearing a lot about GLP-1 medications lately, such as semaglutide (Wegovy®, Ozempic®) or tirzepatide (Zepbound®, Mounjaro®), you’re not alone. These medications have changed the conversation around weight management and metabolic health. But with all the attention comes a lot of confusion. Let’s break down what they are, who may qualify, and what to realistically expect.
What Are GLP-1 Medications?
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone naturally produced by your body after eating. It helps regulate appetite, blood sugar, and digestion by signaling fullness to the brain and slowing stomach emptying.
GLP-1 receptor agonists are medications designed to mimic these natural effects. Depending on the medication and individual response, they may help support:
✅ Appetite regulation
✅ Reduced cravings and food noise
✅ Blood sugar management
✅ Sustainable weight management when combined with healthy lifestyle changes
Some medications, such as tirzepatide, also target an additional hormone pathway (GIP) involved in metabolism and appetite regulation.
Who May Be a Candidate?
GLP-1 medications are FDA-approved for certain adults with:
- Obesity (BMI ≥30)
OR
Overweight (BMI ≥27) with at least one weight-related condition such as:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Sleep apnea
However, eligibility is individualized. Medical history, medications, lifestyle, risk factors, and goals all play an important role in determining whether treatment is appropriate.
GLP-1 medications are not a quick fix and work best as part of a comprehensive plan that includes nutrition, movement, sleep, and long-term habit changes.
What Results Can You Expect?
Results vary by individual, treatment plan, consistency, and medication response.
Many patients notice changes in appetite, cravings, or eating patterns within the first few weeks, while more meaningful weight changes often occur over time.
In clinical trials:
- Semaglutide was associated with an average of approximately 15% body weight reduction
- Tirzepatide demonstrated average weight reductions of approximately 20-22% in some study populations over about 72 weeks
Individual results vary, and no outcome can be guaranteed.
Beyond the scale, some patients report improvements in areas such as:
✓ Energy levels
✓ Blood sugar control
✓ Mobility and joint discomfort
✓ Confidence and overall wellness habits
What About Side Effects?
Like any medication, GLP-1 therapies may cause side effects.
The most common include:
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Bloating or stomach discomfort
These symptoms are often most noticeable early in treatment or during dose increases and may improve over time.
Appropriate dosing, gradual titration, hydration, nutrition guidance, and close follow-up can help improve tolerability.
GLP-1 medications are not appropriate for everyone, which is why medical screening and ongoing provider oversight are important.
Brand-Name vs. Compounded GLP-1 Options
When clinically appropriate, we may prescribe FDA-approved brand-name medications such as Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Zepbound®, or Mounjaro®, sent to your preferred pharmacy.
Some patients may also qualify for manufacturer self-pay programs (such as LillyDirect® for eligible medications). Medication pricing, insurance coverage, and pharmacy costs are determined by the pharmacy/manufacturer and are outside of our control.
For some patients, compounded GLP-1 medications may also be available through licensed compounding pharmacies when clinically appropriate and legally permitted. Compounded medications are custom-prepared formulations and are not FDA-approved in the same manner as commercially manufactured medications, though they may provide an alternative option for certain patients.
